Dhanashri Kulkarni wasn't always an animal person, but that changed one day when she found a lone indie puppy on the road. She took him in and began caring for him. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, she saw how even street animals were suffering from hunger and neglect. This experience ignited a passion in her to ensure that every animal around her was fed and cared for. It was this commitment to helping animals that led her to start Happy Feet Welfare (HFW). By talking with her dog, Cooper, on a daily basis, she realized that animals have their own ways of communicating and feeling emotions. Since its inception in 2021, Dhanashri has been the Managing Trustee of HFW and takes pride in creating a better world for animals.
Malavika's journey into animal rescue began at age 16 when she found a dog on the street who could barely move. As she tried to feed him, the dog, in his desperation, accidentally bit her while grabbing the food. This encounter made her realize how much pain and hunger street animals endure, spurring her commitment to animal rescue. Over the past five years, Malavika has facilitated adoptions, fostered animals, and led countless rescue missions. What started as a simple act of kindness has become a significant part of her life and a driving force behind her work at HFW.
Daily Feeding Drives:
Every day, come rain or shine, our dedicated team ventures out to ensure that no animal goes hungry. From stray dogs wandering the streets to abandoned kittens in need of warmth or injured birds requiring care, our daily feeding drives offer sustenance and hope to all animals in distress.
Monthly Feeding Campaigns:
Alongside our daily efforts, we host monthly feeding campaigns to reach broader communities of animals in need. These campaigns allow us to access remote areas and underserved populations, where resources can be scarce. By collaborating with local volunteers and animal welfare organizations, we expand our impact and promote collective responsibility for our furry friends.
Special Occasions:
Special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, or holidays are an opportunity to give back. We encourage people to sponsor meals for animals during these times, turning celebrations into acts of compassion. Through these gestures, we not only mark meaningful events but also foster empathy and kindness towards animals.
Impact and Outreach:
The impact of our feeding drives goes beyond providing food; it fosters a sense of community and empathy for animals among people from all walks of life. With over 2,100 meals served and counting, our efforts are making a tangible difference. Our outreach programs, educational workshops, and social media campaigns aim to raise awareness about animal welfare issues, encouraging positive actions and paving the way for a more compassionate future.
Through our awareness programs, we aim to empower individuals to become advocates for animal welfare. The key topics we cover include:
Tag Your Pet:
We stress the importance of tagging pets with their name and owner’s contact information. This simple step greatly increases the chances of reuniting lost pets with their families.
Daily Feeding in Communities:
Regular feeding of community dogs not only supports their health but also helps reduce aggressive behavior, creating safer neighborhoods for everyone.
Vaccination:
We educate communities about the importance of vaccinating stray dogs to prevent disease and protect both animals and humans.
Sterilization:
We encourage the sterilization of dogs to control overbreeding, reducing the population of strays and mitigating suffering.
Reacting to Aggressive Street Dogs:
Our programs offer practical advice on safely and compassionately handling aggressive street dogs, promoting understanding and reducing conflicts.
Impact and Outreach
Through our awareness programs, we aim to create a compassionate environment where humans and animals coexist peacefully. By raising awareness and providing education, we hope to inspire positive change in our communities.
In collaboration with the Belgaum Animal Welfare Association (BAWA), we conducted two vaccination drives targeting stray dogs in Belagavi, Karnataka. Our dedicated efforts and volunteer support have helped prevent the spread of illness among stray dog populations, benefiting both animals and humans. These drives demonstrate our commitment to animal welfare and reflect the positive changes we’re making in our community through collaborative efforts.
